October 2018 Principal’s Message

Pu’uhale Ohana,

Today marks the end of the first quarter. It’s a been a busy time for teachers and students as they all get acclimated to their new classroom and grade level expectations. It has been more eventful with Tropical Storm Lane and Hurricane Olivia. Even so, many grade levels have already taken at least one field trip during the first quarter.

Parents had two opportunities to learn about Pu’uhale during our Open House in August and our parent meeting in September. Parents will have monthly opportunities [to learn more]– our next parent meeting is scheduled for October 18, 2018, Specifically about their children, during the parent teacher conferences during the week of October 22 to 26.

We appreciate our families support of our school: by attending parent meetings and conferences, by being part of our School Community Council, by supporting our PTSO Na Hoaloha O Puuhale, and by communicating with us with any questions or concerns they have about the school or about their children.

While the work by teachers, staff and students have been heavy, we have seen tremendous results. Our STRIVE HI 2018 report shows that last school year’s 3rd, 4th and 5th graders showed proficiency gains of 10% in both categories

Proficiency Changes
Year Math Reading Chronic Absenteeism 3rd Grade English Proficiency
2017 36% 41% 13% 54%
2018 46% 51% 9% 61%

Our science proficiency score decreased from 2017 to 2018, from 56% to 44%. The English Language Learners (ELL) on-track to English Proficiency decreased from 2017 to 2018, from 49% to 25%.

We celebrate our successes and know that our goal continues to be that
all students are successful. We are focused on continuing our growth areas and even we are more committed on focusing on science proficiency and ELL English proficiency. We need your support – and want you to learn about all the great things we doing at Pu’uhale.
